In the late 1950s, IBM and General Motors teamed up to develop DAC-1, an early computer-aided design system completed in 1964. This system, based on an IBM 7090 mainframe and a specialized graphics terminal, enabled users to draw and manipulate images with a light pen, advancing the field of automobile design. 🚗 Imagery credits: Fred Krull, General Motors Corporation, GM Research Laboratories, Gwen Bell #cardesign #automotivetechnology #retrotech | Computer History Museum

Explaining on Instagram: "In 1961, an IBM 7094 mainframe at Bell Labs made history by singing “Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two).” Programmer John Kelly and colleagues used early speech synthesis technology to generate the voice, while Max Mathews provided the musical accompaniment. This hauntingly robotic rendition became the first song ever sung by a computer — and later inspired the famous scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey where HAL 9000 sings the same tune. 12 reactions | In the late 1960s, when mainframe computing was evolving, interactive computing was being done with time-sharing because it was economical. But, says Xerox PARC’s Butler Lampson, that wasn’t how anyone wanted to do it. Everyone wanted an efficient, working personal computer like the Alto. He describes exactly how popular the Alto was when it became available in the early 1970s. https://bit.ly/45iFdOc #XeroxAlto | Computer History Museum | Facebook
